OUGD505 - End of Module Evaluation

As a whole I have really enjoyed this module. In studio brief 1 I enjoyed experimenting with my printing practice through screen printing for the bank notes as well as researching into a culture that i am interested in. I feel like the notes that I created were successful in portraying the future of the Japanese Yen. It definitely made me explore a style of graphic design that I haven't really explored before - one which is a bit more minimalist.

In studio brief 2 I was also working on something that I am very passionate about. It goes to show the difference for designing for a cause that you support rather than something random. Additionally because towards the end of this module it was the only brief that I was working on I felt a lot more focused than with other modules which meant that I produced a lot more than I would have if I had briefs running either side of it. The outcomes that I created were of a better quality because of this too because I would go back and change little bits at a time until I was fully happy with it. Creating packaging again has re-inspired me to carry on with packaging as one of my main practices. I feel like the packaging element was the strongest part of this module.

Although because I already had a fair amount of knowledge on my chosen topic I feel like I didn't spend enough time researching it as maybe I should have done. Perhaps my designs would have been a lot more informed if I had done a little bit more research.

I feel like this brief has set me up well for my practice next year as curating my own briefs has given me a good focus which I hope to carry on into next year. Also both briefs of this module have been doing things that I do want to do more of in third year as part of my extended practice.

OUGD406 - End of Module Evaluation

My attendance through the module has been very good, I have tried to attend every session and stay in college until at least half 4 everyday to get extra work done. I feel that this was especially shown in studio brief 1 where I produced lots of different designs and developments. I think that I have managed my time effectively throughout – I have managed to complete everything ahead of time or on time and to a standard that I find acceptable.

Throughout this module I feel that I have worked consistently hard a part from on studio brief 4 where I feel I lost my steam a bit due to the large volume of hand ins and having personal work to do as well. However despite this I feel that I have learnt a great deal during the module as a whole such as how to enter live briefs and competitions and working in a group. I learned a lot about compromising – all the other briefs I have designed only had myself to judge really so having a group of people constantly feeding you their opinions was odd to begin with. I feel that I prospered from this though as I am very proud of what we achieved in studio brief 3 and the fact that our branding will be used.

If I was to do this module again I would try to concentrate on the work more to produce more relevant outcomes. I feel like this module my designs could have definitely been improved through more critiques and refining. But overall I am really pleased with some of the work that I have produced during this module, especially in studio brief 2.

OUGD404 - Design Principles - End of Module Evaluation

Overall through this module I believe that I have attended all the sessions that I could so I have benefitted a lot from learning the basics of graphic design within the lessons. Although with some of the lessons I feel I could have concentrated more to get the most out of it and as a result my blog posts suffered a bit, I think. Even though I have done bookbinding before I learnt a lot more binds that I hadn't learnt before. I even feel confident in doing these binds on my own now. Also I feel like I have improved my screenprinting skills through the module because of the amount that I had to screenprint for my book.

Throughout the brief I think I was a bit overambitious and if I was to do this again I think I would spend more time designing something that actually showed the rules of book layout rather than showing them in a pre-written book. I feel that my finished publication lacks sophistication and is a bit messy, which was said in some of my feedback. I definitely think that I could have done more design wise to the book looking back at it now. But to say that it was such a big book I managed my time well, finishing it and binding it in the week before the deadline. I think that if I had more time I would created a better, neater book because I could have practiced more rather than concentrating on printing and binding it.

After completing this module I would say that bookbinding isn’t one of my strongpoints – I made some silly mistakes while creating the book that made it have a bit of an unkempt feel. Yet I am pleased with the result none the less.

OUGD405 - End of Module Evaluation

Throughout this short module I think I have had 100% attendance and I have tried to stay in the studio as much as possible. I feel that if I stay in the studio I become more inspired by my peers and also if anyone needs help I can help them or vice versa if I get stuck on something. Though this module seems like we have not had much time, I am really pleased with what I have produced. It has proved to me that anything is possible if you crack on and put your heart into it. And now I can see myself developing my own style of graphic design, one that includes illustrations and hand rendered type. But I would like to try and broaden my horizons a bit more and create more contemporary minimalist designs as it is not something that I have tackled before.

Also without feedback I probably would have gotten no where – I am so grateful for the time people give to give me feedback so I always try and give everyone feedback for their work in return. With the workshops we have had in this module I have learned a couple of new things and I can now say that I can use InDesign quite well considering I had never used it before starting this course.  I feel that I have learnt a lot in this module in terms of thinking about tone of voice and target audiences, especially when creating my frame designs. I feel like I went for the wrong tone of voice and made my designs too elaborate, I would definitely come up with some simpler designs if I could do that brief again.

The workload did feel a bit bigger this module but I think that it was just due to a shortened time period, although I did manage to complete my designs by the Friday before the deadline.

However, if I was given the chance to repeat this module I would probably make a more specific plan rather than planning general things like “initial ideas” and “research”. Then I think I may have got more accomplished within the time that we had.
